banning plastic bags
there’s this commercial on the city bus (yes, on roADshow) that informs the good people of hong kong that they consume over 21 million plastic bags a day (remember the population is about 7 million). and now uganda joins the growing number of east african countries to ban the plastic bag in an attempt to clean up cities.
protesting pachyderms
BANGKOK, July 4 (TNA) — Bangkok’s police chief has banned Buddhist protesters from bringing any kind of animal to join their renewed demonstration, scheduled for Friday at Parliament. Speaking on the measure to control Buddhist monks and laypeople who are demanding that the new constitution officially recognise Buddhism as Thailand’s official religion in the charter, Bangkok police chief Pol. happy july 1st
kinda forgot canada day happened, along with st-jean baptiste. I’m more chagrined about missing the 10th anniversary of the HK handover (see economist article)–possibly the only chance to see chinese-style fanfare in hong kong (I have sugary/scary visions of thousands of synchronized chinese school children in victoria park, while the PLA marches down queen’s road or something). coincidentally though, I … Read More
video art

rice rolls
various rice rolls (filled with taro, cabbage, etc.) + sweet chili sauce and soy sauce, from one of the 29 vendors I pass on the 8-minute walk to work.
archetypal HK
I’ve decided to purge my cellphone of pictures. typical HK street: mcdo + kfc + mosque: fog over victoria harbour (guess that’s not typical–ordinarily it would be pollution):
night & day
wat wat wat wat wat (ok, the first one wasn’t a wat, but would you have noticed?) (didn’t think so.) (and did you spot the king?)
walk to work
my apartment building is the white one on the end of this block, on baan phan tom (it doesn’t show, but the building is much newer than the others at only 2 years old). every morning I walk out this small side street (trok), past a couple of very busy and tasty looking food stands–wish I could get out early … Read More
fruit, fruit, everywhere
another one of the happy things about food stands in bangkok is the availability of fruit! I really should take a picture of the typical fruit vendor: his cart is a glass ice box (so you can see what fruit is available), usually with pineapple, rose apples, guava, green papaya, and watermelon. whichever fruit you choose is promptly plucked out … Read More
