because I’ve had constant access to multiple tvs lately, I’ve been watching quite a bit of cnn. amazing. actually, I’m not sure I’m supposed to be laughing so much when watching the news. no, I never really thought about “what jesus would REALLY do” when it comes to buying. the commercials about christian persecution in communist countries are great: “they … Read More

letter from moscow

I’ve been into reading the new yorker lately. Limonov is, at best, a problematic partner for Kasparov. In the seventies, he immigrated to the United States and modelled himself on Charles Bukowski–as dissolute in his prose as in his daily life. In his autobiographical novel, “It’s Me, Eddie,” contempt and self-pity are the prevailing emotions. He describes himself bumming off … Read More

compare this ad, of a typical variety found all over asia: …with this one, which is currently displayed in most metros in montreal: it’s really funny, the poster says, “picture yourself tanned!” and includes a mirror that’s tainted very very yellow. but more like a dirty colour rather than anything remotely pleasant. from the new york times: a vision of … Read More

the book of mormon

S & J came over for dinner and we watched the hockey game. found a sheet of looseleaf on the table with caricature-like drawings; apparently the other day 2 mormons came over and explained the word to K for… two hours. (K explaining resurrection per Elder Roberts’ diagram)

I was looking for toothpaste in taipei, and I laughed as soon as I saw this. 黑人 means “black man” — and I like how the english translation is just a shade off of ‘darkie’. Not in Canada, indeed.
