…with its individually-wrapped plastic fruit. (why wrap it in plastic? to keep it sanitary?)

I heard about shrink-wrapped bananas in Japan. They also have individual Styrofoam packaging for apples in some places.

well, they do like shrink-wrapping some fruit here too, but only in those western-style supermarkets.
maybe in this case it’s like some sort of anti-theft measure… like if I pilfered that unwrapped apple on top there, they would think, “oh, she’s just carrying around a (real) apple in her pocket.”
not that I would do such a thing. I’m an upstanding citizen you know.
