syltetøy... and banos

so far my favourite foodstuff in Norway has been… jam! it’s more fruity and has less of that artificial gelatin consistency than what I’m used to, which means it’s easier to use a spoon with this stuff than a knife. our cupboard is currently stocked with apricot, strawberry, raspberry, and (deliciously chunky) apple jam–and with a higher turnover rate than I’d like to admit.

the bread here is also spectacular, the average loaf being something I would have died for in NY. made with a variety of grains, even grocery-store bread is sold in whole loaves and baked daily… I’m not sure I’ve even seen a package of preservative laden plastic-wrapped mushy bread anywhere.

but my latest discovery? banana spread! amazing stuff, it makes every slice of bread taste like banana bread! :o

banos: "new and better!"

Ingredients for the “bananpålegg”:

  • Bananer (36%)
  • sukker
  • herdet vegetabilsk fett (uten transfett)
  • vann
  • surhetsregulerende middel (melkesyre)
  • fargestoff (tagetesekstrakt)
  • konserveringsmidler (kaliumsorbat of natriumbenzoat)

squeezable food

I am currently taking a Norwegian course at the University of Oslo, and each day during our mid-class break I look for a treat at the cafeteria. Amongst the chocolate, waffles, and buns, you can also find conveniently-sized-but-overpackaged nugatti (nutella) in a tube:

though this doesn’t look half as exciting as the “mini kaviar”! oooooooooh

(unfortunately I discovered later that this is more like fishy spam paste than anything remotely fancy.)

thousand-year-old icecream

from the xie xie sandwich shop on 9th ave. sandwiches definitely not as good as num pang in the village, but I love the icecream sandwiches! the centre is blackened caramel (tastes exactly like the crunchy caramel in a skør bar) and they make the ice cream and cookies themselves. delicious!

shilin night market

one of the side entrances to the largest night market in taipei:

and the food that is there:  meat skewers (pick whichever you want, and she’ll fry them for you), lemon jelly drink, pan-fried buns (qian bao) with vegetable or meat fillings, and cool looking roti machine.

but my favourite is the “pulled” roti (zhua bing)–fluffy, buttery, and scallion-y–which I love with hot sauce and fried with an egg!

vinnie's pizzeria

how’s this for a pizza idea: mac & cheese. also shown here: black bean & avocado slice, vegan meat & cheese slice, and garlic knots.

the portions are large so one slice is probably enough, but we wanted to try the different kinds! to be honest they look better than they taste, but it’s not bad… definitely worth going if you’re in the neighbourhood. slices $4, garlic knots $1 (for 5).
